What are the most dangerous roads in Baton Rouge?

On Behalf of | Jan 2, 2025 | Car Accidents |

Baton Rouge has several busy roads that see frequent accidents, making them some of the most dangerous in Louisiana. Understanding these hotspots can help drivers stay vigilant and reduce the risk of accidents.

Airline Highway

Airline Highway, also known as U.S. 61, is one of the most accident-prone roads in Baton Rouge. This major thoroughfare handles a high volume of traffic daily, including large trucks. Speeding and congestion often contribute to accidents, particularly at intersections like Florida Boulevard and Old Hammond Highway.

Interstate 10

Interstate 10 is a critical route through Baton Rouge, but it’s also a common site for collisions. Heavy traffic, especially during rush hour, increases the likelihood of accidents. Areas near the Mississippi River Bridge and the I-10/I-12 split are particularly hazardous due to merging lanes and frequent bottlenecks.

Florida Boulevard

Florida Boulevard, or U.S. 190, is another high-risk road. This major east-west route sees numerous accidents due to its mix of high speeds, busy intersections, and frequent pedestrian activity. Intersections near Airline Highway and Sherwood Forest Boulevard are especially dangerous.

Burbank Drive

Burbank Drive has become increasingly risky as the city has grown. High traffic from nearby neighborhoods and LSU, combined with narrow lanes and inadequate lighting, makes this road a challenge, particularly at night or during inclement weather.

Staying safe on Baton Rouge roads

According to The Advocate, Baton Rouge tied for the fifth most dangerous metro area in the United States. While certain roads are more dangerous than others, safe driving practices can make a significant difference.

Avoid distractions, obey speed limits, and stay alert in heavy traffic areas. Baton Rouge’s roads may pose challenges, but awareness and caution can help reduce risks and keep everyone safer.
