Car accidents: 1 dead in 2-car crash in Louisiana

One person has been killed in a head-on crash in Beauregard Parish, police have confirmed. Louisiana State Police responded to the car accident that claimed the life of a passenger in one of the vehicles. Car accidents causing fatalities are always investigated thoroughly, and sometimes result in criminal charges, though none have been announced in this case as of this report.

According to the investigation so far, a driver headed northbound in an SUV on US 171 apparently lost control of the vehicle. This caused the SUV to veer off the left side and over the median into the southbound lanes. The SUV struck a smaller passenger vehicle head-on. All occupants of both vehicles were apparently wearing seat belts.

This likely saved the lives of both drivers, one of whom was unhurt and the other suffered only minor injuries. However, a passenger in the car was was pronounced dead at the scene by the local coroner in Beauregard. Police obtained toxicology samples from both drivers to determine whether one or both individuals were intoxicated at the time of the crash, but they have not received the results as of this report.

When investigating car accidents, Louisiana police will often need to consider all possible causes for the crash, which can include drugs or alcohol as factors. In these cases, criminal charges are typically filed against the driver or drivers believed to be drunk or high. Even if no criminal charges end up being filed in this instance, the family of the deceased passenger is still entitled to file a wrongful death lawsuit against any party or parties believed to have contributed to the crash through negligence or recklessness.
